Kruger Big 5 Safari – 7 Day

This is a special 6-night 7-day tour with the best that Kruger has to offer for the wildlife enthusiast with a real interest in wildlife and possibly photography and who wishes to spend a fair amount of time in the bush. We will begin in the southern section of the park and move north wards changing location every two days making it possible for you to see both animal life and birdlife in the various sections of the park with varying habitat.

We depart from Johannesburg early morning at about 7:00 am or from Nelspruit about 12:30 pm for Kruger National Park. The journey from Johannesburg takes approximately 5 -6 hours driving time with a stop in between for a comfort break. We will be driving through the Drakensberg foothills for some of the time in the more scenic sections of Mpumalanga. The journey will be made in an air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver and upon arrival at the preferred gate to the park we will switch to an open safari vehicle. Game viewing starts as we enter and Kruger has some of the most spectacular game viewing in Africa. Look out for the Big 5, Kudu, Impala, Warthog, Giraffe, hHippo, Hyena, Zebra, Nyala along the way. We arrive at the rest camp about 6 pm and check in to the accommodation. A room with en-suite bathroom with all amenities is provided to our guests. This evening after a fairly long day we use the camp restaurant where a selection of meals/drinks will be provided.

This is our first game-viewing day and our expert guide will start you off in the wee hours of the morning so as not to miss any of the primetime game viewing. Wake up and smell the coffee that your guide has prepared, a quick rusk and coffee and we are off. Dawn and dusk are the peak game movement hours especially for predators and there is a good chance to find leopard, cheetah, lions and hyenas out and about before they find a shady spot to spend the day. We will return to camp at about 10:00 am for a brunch prepared by your guide. The game drive will resume after everyone has had a chance to freshen up after the brunch or a siesta. This time we will get back at around 6:00 pm when the gates of the camp close for the night. You have time to rest, relax and check your photographs while your guide either prepares the meal or we may use the camp restaurant where a selection of meals/drinks will be provided. We will be moving tomorrow to another camp so please be prepared to load luggage in the morning.

Today will be very similar to yesterday except that everyone has had a first hand experience of being in the bush and has a better idea of how long they wish to spend in the bush. This actually can vary on a daily basis depending on the sightings we encounter and the weather and of course your own inclinations as a group. There are many rest stops and picnic spots where we can have a bush breakfast instead of going back to the rest camp and depending on what is happening we are prepared for any eventuality. Stopping at a scenic spot for breakfast we continue on our game drive when everyone feels comfortable and there is no real pressure to get to the camp. Shops and toilet facilities are available in many spots so we are able to take in a fair amount of area on a day drive. We will get back at around 6:00 pm when the gates of the camp close for the night. You have time to rest, relax and check your photographs while your guide gets dinner ready. Dinner will be served by our staff. This is usually in the form of a barbecue classic South African style known as a Braai.

Today we will be changing rest camps and so it will necessary to pack the previous night and be prepared this morning. A slightly later start at 7:00 am takes us on a day of game viewing and an enjoyable time in the bush. We will get back at around 6:00 pm when the gates of the camp close for the night. You have time to rest, relax and check your photographs while your guide gets dinner ready. Dinner will be served by our staff.

Today will be another great game viewing day and we will be spending time looking for the Big 5 specifically as we have been doing. All rest camps have a sightings board and your guide will be actively collating information on the latest and best sightings for your game viewing pleasure. A hot dinner under the African sky around a roaring campfire ends the day. Tonight we embark on a night drive with SANParks.

A full day of game viewing and today we will be specifically looking for and trying to see animals that we have not seen thus far. A day where we will like to complete everyone’s sighting list and do the utmost to make special since it is our last full day in the bush. This evening after a fairly long day we use the camp restaurant where a selection of meals/drinks will be provided.

This morning we start slightly later to give everyone a chance to pack all their things and prepare for the journey back to Johannesburg /Nelspruit. We depart from the rest camp at 7:30 am and head out catching game viewing opportunities along the way. The drive back to Johannesburg will take about 5-6 hours from the time we exit the park and switch to an air-conditioned vehicle from the open game viewer. We usually arrive in Johannesburg before 4:00pm. Of course the traffic plays an important role in the time taken.
