Open air museums

Cappadocia is home to beautiful open air museums and with most other sites centrally located around Goreme, the Goreme open air museum is a must visit by any traveler in Cappadocia and resembles a vast monastic complex composed of monasteries placed side-by-side, each with its own fantastic church, most of which belong to the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries. The museum contains the finest of the rock-cut churches, with beautiful frescoes (wall paintings) whose colors still retain all their original freshness. It also presents unique examples of rock hewn architecture and fresco technique. The museum has been a member of UNESCO World Heritage List since 1984, and was one of the first two UNESCO sites in Turkey. Standing as it does in the very center of the region with easy access from all directions. It is only a15 minutes’ walk from Goreme village center.

Uchisar Castle

Situated at the highest point in Cappadocia, on the Nevsehir-Goreme road. Many rooms hollowed out into the rock are connected to each other with stairs, tunnels and passages. At the entrances of the rooms, there are millstone doors, just like the ones in the underground settlements. The top of the Uchisar Castle, provides a magnificent panorama of the surrounding area with Mount Erciyes in the distance. Located just 5 km from Goreme

Ihlara Valley

Ihlara Valley (often misspelled as Ilhara Valley), near two of the three volcanoes of Cappadocia, Mount Hasan and Mount Melendiz, is a canyon with a depth of approximately 100m and was formed by the Melendiz River thousands of years ago. It begins at the Ihlara village and ends at the Selime cathedral carved out of rocks. Around eighty thousand people once lived in the Ihlara Valley in more than four thousand dwellings. It is very pleasant to walk through the Ihlara valley by the vineyards, poplars and pistachio trees to the soothing sound of the rushing water (Melendiz River), and surrounded by a rich wildlife of lizards, frogs, butterflies, birds and sometimes eagles and other mammals like lambs and sheep. During hike you can see many churches decorated with frescoes.

Avanos the art center of Cappadocia

Famous for its ceramics, pottery and carpets, where crafters make wonderful souvenirs, available in a wide range of prices. Avanos has a lively center including a modern Turkish bath (hamam) and this town has a large travelling market which visit on Fridays. Among the town are beautiful stone houses of traditional Ottoman architecture with ancient decorations, motifs and murals. Avanos is set on the bank of the Redriver, the longest river in Turkey. This river supplies the red pottery clay from which Avanos derives its livelihood and fame. The town is located about 10 km away from Goreme

Underground Cities

There are 36 underground cities in Cappadocia with Kaymakli and Derinkuyu being the most popular among visitors. Kaymakli is the largest and Derinkuyu is the deepest underground city in the region, both cities are a 30 minutes’ drive outside of Goreme and an easy trip to make. Kaymakli’s history dates back to Hittites and Phrygians Period in the 7th and 8th century B.C. and it is estimated that up to 3,500 people once lived here. Kaymakli was opened to visitors in 1964 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

Rock formations

Imagination Valley (Devrent Valley / Dervent Valley)
The small fairy chimneys in the valley form a lunar landscape, or moonscape, revealing many different rock formations. It looks like a zoo sculptured by nature with its animal shaped rocks, the easiest to see are the camel, snake, seals, and dolphin, however, like looking at the clouds, let your imagination run and you will find many others. A 10 minute drive from Goreme.

Monks Valley / Mushroom Valley (Pasabag Fairy chimney)
Pasabag valley contains the most striking fairy chimneys in Cappadocia with twin and even triple rock caps. This style is unique even for Cappadocia and these fairy chimneys are named mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys. The hermits of Cappadocia distanced themselves from the world by cutting into fairy chimneys rather than living on top of columns. They hollowed out the chimneys from bottom to top creating rooms at 10-15m high. A chapel dedicated to St. Simeon (Simon), and a hermit’s shelter is built into one of the fairy chimneys with three heads.
